DIY relaxing bath salts made with kid safe essential oils and simple ingredients for a better bedtime.
Bedtime has always been my nemesis. I have 5 year old twin boys, who can be playing quietly with LEGOs for hours then turn into wild men as soon as the bedtime hour hits. I've tried a lot of things to help make our bedtime routine smoother and I've finally found something that helps tame the night time crazies.
My secret weapon is a super easy DIY bath salts recipe featuring relaxing, kid safe essential oils and a few simple ingredients. My boys are now asking for their "oil bath" at night and it's been a game changer for our family.
Are you looking for something to make your kids' bedtime routine a little calmer and a lot less stressful? This recipe might be just what you need.

DIY Relaxing Bath Salts for Kids
Before I share our recipe, let me get a few things out of the way. I'm not a doctor or an aromatherapist. I'm a mom sharing something that has worked for our family, for information purposes only. Nothing in this post should be taken as medical advice.
Also, keep in mind that most aromatherapists do not recommend using essential oils on kids under the age of 2. So I would not recommend using these salts for kids under 2, or for kids who are likely to try to drink or ingest bath water. For more on safe essential oil usage with kids, click here.
And this is awesome: this recipe is kid safe but it's also perfect for adults too. So if you need a fun gift idea for a friend or a relaxing bath yourself after a long day (who doesn't?!), give these a try.
To make your own relaxing bath salts, you will need:
- 1/2 cup Epsom Salt
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon carrier oil (I prefer fractionated coconut oil)
- 3 drops Nighty Night Essential oil
- Glass jar (I use mason jars)
These amounts will make enough salts for a half pint mason jar. You can double or triple the amounts of each ingredient depending on the size of your container.
Start by mixing your epsom salt and baking soda together in a glass bowl. Set aside.
Next, in a small glass bowl, mix together 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil (or your preferred carrier oil) with 3 drops of Nighty Night essential oil.
My boys and I love this oil blend. It's super relaxing and calming. I diffuse it myself every night to fall asleep. And I love the fact that Plant Therapy makes it easy to know that it is safe to use with my kids as it's part of their Kid Safe line.
As much as we love Nighty Night, I've heard that the patchouli smell in this blend is a little too strong for some people. If you're not a fan of patchouli, you can substitute Plant Therapy's Sweet Dreams blend or plain Lavender oil.
Once your oil is mixed, pour it into your epsom salt & baking soda blend and stir until it is well combined.
That's it! Your bath salts are now ready to go. Store them in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. They will be infused with the calming scent of your essential oils, plus the moisturizing benefits of the carrier oil. Perfect for a night time bath after a long day.

To use your new bath salts, simply add a few scoops to your child's nighttime bath. Mix gently with your hand to help dissolve the salts.
The warm bath water may intensify the scent, so start with a little at a time. I've found about 1/4 cup works great for us.
This new bedtime bath routine has made a big difference for our family. My boys are more ready for stories and bed after their relaxing bath, and I'm a much happier mama when bedtime is more calm and less chaos. I'm planning to make jars of Bedtime Bath Salts for all my mom friends for Mother's Day this year too!
