Delia Owens’ debut novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, follows Kya Clark, a young woman abandoned at age 6 to grow up alone in the North Carolina marsh. Known to the townsfolk as "Marsh Girl," Kya avoids most people and attends school for just one day in her life.
Kya’s simple routine of hunting for mussels and listening to seagulls is disturbed when she is suspected of murdering the handsome and popular Chase Andrews. Kya’s peaceful life in the wild grows more complicated as she is brought into town to stand trial, where she must deal with the arrival of old friends and the repercussions of her unconventional childhood.
This novel is a murder mystery and coming of age novel wrapped in one, and it makes a fabulous choice for book clubs. There are so many layers to uncover, the story is compelling, and the language is reminiscent of classics like To Kill a Mockingbird.
